Project Info

Spiti Valley

A cold desert mountain valley, located in the Indian Himalayas. Spiti stands for "the middle land" - the land between Tibet and India

Crystal clear night skies with an endless number of stars disappearing into the depths of darkness. Narrow gravel roads with almost vertical drops wind for 400 km through the barren and dry valley with the oldest monastries in the world.
Spiti is one of the most sparsely populated regions in India and is the gateway to the most northern region of the country. The very thin air in the high desert, located at over 3500 meter above sea level , sets off the dark blue midday sky from the finely serrated mountain ridges like sharp knife edges.
In summer, semi-nomadic goat shepherds let their herds graze the freshly grown greenery until the onset of winter cuts the valley off from the outside world.
