I Speak Ukrainian
This body of work investigates the people of Ukraine affected by the war with Russia, both within the country and in neighbouring European countries where many Ukrainian families have fled as refugees. I travelled throughout Ukraine, a country I was born in, documenting how life had changed for typical Ukrainian families, how they considered their country’s place in the world and whether their sentiments towards their nationality, culture and identity have shifted since the outbreak of the war. I photographed train workers who found themselves in a role akin to frontline fighters overnight, truck drivers who became first aid suppliers, artists and DJs who became humanitarian fundraisers and everyday citizens who joined in battle having no prior military experience. Though the country is plagued in poverty and uncertainty many families living outside the war zone have remained in their homes; others who were less lucky had no choice but to immigrate into western parts of Ukraine or out
