Life in the shipyard of Dhaka
Hard and unsafe work in the shipyard operating in Keraniganj where more than a thousand people work
On the bank of river Buriganga, a shipyard operating in Keraniganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The knocks on the metal are heard from when the sun rises until a long time after it sets; as the flashes of light from the welds. It is a routine, hard job, for very little money. Thousands of workers, some of them children, are remaking new ships and old ships manually, where they still don’t have facilities for using automation.
They come towards the capital in the hope of making a living and earning more money. But with no educational qualifications they don’t get the opportunities to work in many sectors. They finish here, working in the shipyard, where they earn little money in return for dangerous and unsafe work. These problems can be summarised as a lack of supporting materials and safety measures, irresponsibility of the authority, and a bad working environment.
