POINT BREAK - Riding the wave of empowerment

The story of the surfers girls of Bangladesh that, in a conservative society where gender roles are deeply ingrained, challenge traditional expectations by embracing a sport in a country not traditionally associated with it, often seen as the domain of men.

The surfing world extends far beyond the idyllic sun-kissed beaches of tropical paradises.
In recent years, Bangladesh has emerged as an unlikely but inspiring destination for surfers, including a growing local community of surfer girls who are not only challenging gender stereotypes but also making waves of empowerment in their coastal communities.
Located in the Southern part of the country, the waves of the Bay of Bengal crash against the shores of Cox's Bazar, creating a unique haven for surfers.
Surfing here is still in its early stages but has rapidly gained popularity among the locals, including young girls who have enthusiastically embraced this sport.
The journey of a surfer girl in Bangladesh is a story of courage and resilience.
Despite initial resistance, these girls find empowerment and camaraderie in riding waves. Hindered by social expectations, some secretly surfed before school or work. Initially supported by humanitarian organizations, they face challenges a year post-program termination, with limited access to education and essential supplies. Government restrictions exacerbate the situation, affecting family income. Moreover, lacking National Identification cards creates barriers to education. Once seen as a source of pride, these girls now face parental pressure, with some forced into early marriages, dimming their dreams.
