Eternal Embrace: A Balinese Perspective on Life's Continuum

"Eternal Embrace" captures the Balinese view of death as a cyclical journey, where funeral ceremonies signify not an end, but a transformative step allowing spirits to continue their eternal cycle of life.

This project represents a unique perspective on the concept of death. Throughout my life, I held the belief that death signified an end, accompanied by sorrow. However, my perception underwent a profound transformation when I became part of my husband's Balinese community. Witnessing numerous ceremonies in his village over the years, I couldn't help but question the serenity surrounding the passing of a loved one. How could people remain calm? Why were there smiles amidst the mourning?

Driven by these inquiries, I embarked on a journey to comprehend the Balinese mindset, immersing myself in their perspective to view things through a completely different lens. The crux of my realization lies in the Balinese view of cremation as not an end, but rather another phase of existence. For them, a funeral ceremony is a crucial step in the perpetual cycle of life. It serves as a means to release the spirit, enabling it to continue its journey and eventually reincarnate with a new family member. It's a cycle without end, an integral part of life that demands acceptance.

One set portrays a touching moment where a grandmother communicates directly with her deceased husband during a special ceremony, reflecting the Balinese belief in a continuum of care and connection even beyond physical absence.
The second set reveals the profound responsibilities undertaken during a funeral ceremony. Each person is carrying the spirit of the deceased symbolized with some decorations, a Balinese turban, and a picture of the defunct. Despite the serious nature of the occasion, the shared smiles and joy signify the Balinese perspective that excessive sorrow may disrupt the spirit's journey. Instead, the ceremony becomes a communal opportunity to support one another, embodying the intertwined nature of life and death in Balinese culture.
