Sembrando luchas (Sowing struggles)
The struggles of women in Mexico, bearing witness to their resilience, determination and impact on Mexican society
In the heart of a nation rich in contrasts, Mexican women embody the social struggle that grips a country torn apart by a silent war. This land is marked by astonishing figures: 11 femicides a day, over 100,000 missing persons, including 24,600 women since 2006, impunity, injustice, violence... Mexican women evolve in a hostile environment that has taught them to live with resilience. It is a movement, also fueled like in Europe during the #MeToo movement, by anger and a thirst for justice.
So it is women, mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, friends, neighbors, many and united by a common cause, fighting for their rights, for a dignified life free from violence. You can find them in the streets, chanting feminist songs, defying tear gas, carrying the pink cross of femicides on their shoulder, wearing the portraits of those still being sought, or cultivating the future with their hands in the soil.
Since 2018, I embarked on a long-term photographic project, converging the lives of women of all ages, whose profiles intertwine and complement each other, rising beyond the status of victims to become true rights advocates. I have documented the individual or collective organization of many women in over 20 states of Mexico. Whether they are survivors of femicides, young feminist activists against gender violence in the capital and its surroundings, mothers of the missing digging the desert and Mexican mountains to find their bodies, advocates for the right to abortion at the country's borders, fighters for the rights of political prisoners in the rural areas of Oaxaca, or protectors of the environment in contaminated mangroves and drought-ravaged regions.
This reportage stems from the desire to account for Mexican women's commitment to social struggles, focusing on these fighters who generate an impact and become a source of inspiration for all others. The strength of Mexican women is undeniable. To understand it, one only needs to delve into their essence, nurtured by love, empathy, and a desire for justice.
