"IL MARE TI ENTRA DENTRO"
A sensitive observation of the traditional fishermen of the Aeolian Islands, their responsible fishing methods and their poetic perseverance through the hardships they encounter as a result of climate change and increased exploitation of the marine life.
“IL MARE TI ENTRA DENTRO” is an ongoing film photography project that takes place on the volcanic island of Stromboli. The precious summertimes I have spent on this highly spiritual UNESCO world heritage site expanded to an ever-unfolding observation of the traditional fishermen of older and newer generation and their art of living and working through multiple factors that have great impacts on their antique craft. Beside the accelerated climate change and the increased exploitation of the marine life which they experience closely from first hand; they also need to be highly attuned to the slightest change in the neverending dance of all four elements completed with the risk of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami hazards.
They say it’s a choice of living. A co-existence, an alliance between man and nature. These fishermen are devoted to keep their inherited artisanal and respectful methods that protect the marine ecosystem and defend its balance. They choose to follow a sea etiquette that is based on a conservative, conscious and sustainable philosophy. Still, in face of all their attempts, more and more often they happen to fish well only once or twice a week.
What are those great inner forces then, that despite such harsh circumstances and modest results still drive them to cultivate this ancient craft, a craft that by nature requires so much fatigue and time? Will the next generation manage to stay connected to their roots and have such perseverance and faith to preserve their heritage?
Questions I would like to find the answer to through my project.
