Bell'Italia
This project uncovers the hidden realities of Southern Italian cities, in this case the city of Cosenza, challenging the idyllic image of "La Bella Italia." Amidst picturesque backdrops, it highlights neglect, dirty and unsanitary conditions and the plight of the people attitude. This work encourages reflection on "Beautiful & Famous Italy" and the need for positive change in the mentality and politics.
My photographic project aims to offer a profound and investigative look into the hidden reality of many cities in Southern Italy, with a particular focus on the city of Cosenza (Calabria). This work seeks to challenge the stereotypical view of "La Bella Italia," revealing its darker side often overlooked by the media and tourists.
In the streets of Cosenza and many other Southern italian cities, the picturesque beauty of squares and monuments clashes with a somber reality of dirt and neglect.
The hygiene conditions and the inability of local authorities to address these issues are alarming. Through my series of photographs, I strive to raise significant questions about Italy's representation and the reality of many Italian areas like the one portrayed. Why is this Italy not acknowledged and discussed in magazines, news and on social media?
In recent days, some discussed about the working conditions of garbage collectors, some of whom are forced to strike because they do not receive their salaries due to "major internal forces" within the municipality and/or the regional amministration. However, it is also true that in some places in Southern Italy, garbage collectors clock in and then do not show up for work. What is not working?
It is essential to note that a significant portion of the population in these places seems unconcerned about the conditions in which their city is left and treated. Often, they contribute themselves to the deterioration and show little care for it.
I tried to shed light on this "hidden" Italy but that exists. This reality that happens on the streets of many Italian cities, inviting viewers to question how we can contribute to positive change and feel accountable for something that happens every day and for a change that must occur because this reality cannot happen in a "First World" country.
