Vestiges of a National Strike

A series of ongoing protests arose in Colombia on 28 April 2021 against increased taxes, corruption, and health care reform proposed by the government of President Iván Duque. The tax initiative was introduced to expand funding to Ingreso Solidario, a universal basic income social program established in April 2020 to provide relief during the COVID-19 pandemic in Colombia, while the legislative Bill 010 proposed the privatisation of the health care system. The result was the most significant protest movement in the country's history, characterised by at least 40 deaths, arbitrary arrests and harsh sentences against the youths who took to the streets to claim their rights. One year after the strike, the circumstances of the deaths of the young demonstrators are not clear, nor are the whereabouts of the many who disappeared in this year of protests.
