Sanctuary - Animal Rescue During the War in Ukraine
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, people have been risking their lives to save animals, and refugees have been bringing their companion animals with them as they flee the country.
Within the main Ukrainian refugee pathway is an animal rescue pipeline running from western Europe to eastern Ukraine. Donations and supplies come in through Poland to western Ukraine, then get distributed by local groups within the country. Animals (mostly dogs and cats) are coming the other direction - rescued from conflict areas in eastern Ukraine and transported to Lviv, then Poland, then on to rescue organizations in Europe. But it's not just animals - one rescue group also evacuated a woman, her children and three dogs from Lviv. She is an animal rescuer herself and got connected to a safe place to stay in Berlin through her animal connections.
