Orthodox Easter in Olympos Village , Karpathos Island, Greece

The village of Olympos, up in the mountains of Karpathos Island, is one of the few places in Greece where the ancient Byzantine traditions are still alive during the Easter Orthodox celebrations . Starting the Good Friday and ending the Tuesday after Easter there are different celebrations that involve the whole village. From the preparation of bread in the ancient wood-burning ovens, to the procession of icons and to the memory of the dead in the cemetery. Women still wear traditional costumes and men carry icons in the procession. I took the opportunity to photograph the daily life and some moments of the Easter celebrations (April 2022)
