Hoarder's Goldfield
A four day documentary of the biggest open-air ‘hoarders’ market in the Southern Hemisphere
I recently returned to Australia to document the biggest open-air ‘hoarders’ market in the Southern Hemisphere. I spent four days documenting the 20-something kilometre field of what most people in Australia would refer to as ‘Bogans’.
The market, one of the country’s longest running, offers an incredible insight into rural, country Australia – drawing an audience from pockets of Australia that have remained untouched for decades. It’s almost like stepping back into 1980’s outback Australia, with many of the vendors having come since then.
Growing up in country Australia – I’m from Snake Valley originally – I’ve always loved and appreciated the weirdness that comes with these markets, but seeing it on this kind of scale is a different thing.
The title of the project, ‘Hoarder’s Goldfield’ is a nod to the market’s location – the original site of Australia’s gold rush in the 1800’s.
