HOME-LAND-(e)SCAPE

I went to Iceland for the first time in 2006. Since then I try to come back as often as I can. I can't explain the magnetic attraction I feel for this island except by thinking that, in a previous life, I was an Arctic tern.

I took this series of images last summer, after the first hard lockdown we underwent in Italy. I followed an irrepressible instinct to go back in Iceland. I left the place where I was born, my real “homeland”, to return to a distant land, to which I feel I belong and which I perceive as my ideal “homeland”.

I am deeply bonded to Icelandic landscapes. Here I feel at home and here I would like to take root. I recognize myself and find myself more at ease in Icelandic landscapes, so different from those I’m used to in Italy. And if I have to escape from anything, like the anguish of the lockdown, the only place I can think of as a refuge is here. Where less is more, where I have more oxygen to breathe, more sky above my head, and where finally, I can feel in balance with the world.
