Husna and The boxing sisters of Rwaga Refugees' camp, Iraqi Kurdistan

Husna is part of a group of women living in an Iraqi Kurdistan refugee camp. Here a boing class imparts lessons that go far beyond self-defense.

Rawanga, home to more than 15000 internally displaced persons, is one of the 25 camps around Dohuk, a northern governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan. Husna, a Yezidi girl and her family have been living there since 2014, when they abandoned their home fleeing from ISIS aggression. Through active participation in ‘Boxing Sisters’ program, she has discovered her talent for this sport. Lotus Flowers, a No Profit, has recently initiated boxing training courses to restore confidence in women whose lives have been inflicted by war and violence. Having been exposed to gender-oriented brutality in its extremest, the Yazidi boxing sisters have very strong motivations to learn to equipt themselves with self-defense skills. Hussna’s outstanding performance, has granted her to become a certified trainer who will expand the programs scope by teaching boxing to other female residents of the region’s camps.
