Fire at the Mill of Maroggia

Historic Ticino mill destroyed by fire

On the evening of November 23 around 5 pm, a violent fire broke out at the mill. In a short time it was completely enveloped by flames, which destroyed a large part of the structure. In order to extinguish the fire, about eighty firemen, Melide, of the Lugano and Mendrisiotto Rescue Center and of the Impresa FFS defense, were engaged and worked all night and until the following day. Rail and road traffic was heavily disrupted for many hours.
The mill of Maroggia was born in the last years of 1800, it was the biggest in Ticino and the last industrial mill. For the people of Ticino, it is a piece of history that is going away.
I had to go to the place of the fire because I work for the Corriere del Ticno. The reportage was carried out on the evening of November 23rd and the following day.
The owners plan to rebuild the mill.
