Men and Vultures

Installed in 1989 near Iguatu, a little city of "sertão"(backlands) of Brazil, this dump for many years is causing damage to the environment and to people. The residents of Vila Cajazeiras, the neighborhood near the dump, are the most affected as are the 35 pickers who work daily in the dump and live in the side tents. Dioxins are persistent organic pollutants that can cause cancer and damage the thyroid and respiratory system. The vultures are precious allies for garbage pickers because they eat scraps of food and spoiled food, thus preventing them from catching diseases.
