The Potters of Dharavi
A day in the life of traditional potters in Dharavi, Mumbai.....Asia's largest slum.
Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, India, considered to be one of world's largest slums. Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometres and a population of about 700,000, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. A community of potters have been living and working inside this area since the past 100 years and they make earthen pots the same way their ancestors did. Despite the cramped spaces and population, the slum is surprisingly clean and the people are happy. I spent a day walking and photographing various aspects of the lives of the potters and their families and I came away very impressed and humbled.
