It was a journey through Romania that led me to a charcoal burner that is in the smoke and heat every day to turn wood into coal. All this for the charcoal that ends up at our barbecues.

The life of a charcoal burner is very modest and lonely. For weeks 5 meter high piles are kept burning, which is not harmless, not to mention the health risks. The piles also have to be watched at night so that the charring does not happen with a flame. This is the only way to produce the coveted charcoal.

A difficult life for a man who doesnt know anything else.
