With the era of consumerism, waste management has become one of the main problems that all nations have to face. There are enormous differences in approach between less developed geographical areas and more developed areas, where environmental sensitivity is much stronger. Even today about half of the world's population does not have access to the most basic waste management services, which is why every year mounds of waste are produced and placed in huge uncontrolled landfills, often causing irreparable environmental damages. In the most advanced populations, an approach aimed at protecting the environment and recovering resources is preferred, following the principles of the so-called "circular economy". In these last cases is required a complex planning work as well as large investments in order to prepare the services and the construction of the plants whose management is always very demanding
