I volti della Casa Internazionale delle donne

A Roma nel quartiere Trastevere esiste un posto speciale, un edificio antico e bellissimo, un tempo conosciuto come complesso del Buon Pastore, che oggi prende il nome di Casa Internazionale delle Donne.

Un tempo reclusorio femminile, da posto di sofferenza si è trasformato in casa accogliente per le donne di qualsiasi età e provenienza, in particolare per quelle più fragili. Il cortile con le sue palme e le piante di magnolia, sul quale si affacciano le finestre dell’edificio, è il cuore della casa, dove trovano spazio un bar un ristorante e una ludoteca. Le stanze coi soffitti a volta, che un tempo sono state le celle per le donne imprigionate nel complesso, oggi accolgono uffici, sale conferenze, teatro, sale di musica, palestra, consultori.

Da luogo di discriminazione a luogo di emancipazione, da luogo di sofferenza a luogo di incontri e di accoglienza.

E tante sono le donne che lavorano al suo interno. Dalle educatrici alle segretarie, dalle artiste alle cameriere, alle segretarie, alle ballerine, alle dottoresse del consultorio. Anche se la Casa delle Donne oggi è a rischio sfratto, la forza e la costanza delle donne e delle associazioni che la supportano le permettono di resistere, e di rimanere il luogo aperto e accogliente che è sin dagli anni 80, quando fu occupata dal movimento delle donne.

The faces of the International House of Women

In Rome in the Trastevere district there is a special place, an ancient and beautiful building, once known as the Complesso del Buon PAstore, which today is called the International House of Women. Once a female recluse, from a place of suffering, it has become a welcoming home for women of all ages and backgrounds, especially for the most fragile. The courtyard with its palm trees and magnolia trees, overlooked by the windows of the building, is the heart of the house, where there is a bar, a restaurant and a playroom. The rooms with vaulted ceilings, which were once the cells for the women imprisoned in the complex, today host offices, conference rooms, theater, music halls, gymnasium, and consultants. From place of discrimination to place of emancipation, from place of suffering to place of meetings and welcome. And there are many women working inside it. From the educators to the secretaries, from the artists to the waitresses, to the secretaries, to the dancers, to the doctors of the counseling center. Even though the House of Women today is at risk of being evicted, the strength and constancy of women and the associations that support it allow it to resist, and to remain the open and welcoming place that has been since the 80s, when it was occupied by the movement of women.
