xico: The help gone missing

On the 19th September 2017 an earthquake magnitude 7.1 struck Mexico City and the states of Puebla and Morello. 369 people died and around 190k buildings were affected. The international response was strong, the USAID agency founded $400,000, Israel and Japan sent over 70 highly trained rescue team members each, and all of the majors and local ONGS actively supported the recovery operations.

The Mexican red cross received more than 144 million pesos in donations. Private companies and public figures like Carlos Slim, BBVA, Lady Gaga, Google, Facebook, Apple, Samsung and Coca-Cola have donated from 110 to 1 million dollars each, countless are the other big brands operating in the country who have been making donations directly in the affected areas.

The government led by president Nieto promised 1.7 millions of dollars in aid for people who lost or seen their houses damaged, months after, this money is yet to be delivered.

Almost 57 million dollars donated have gone missing, standing to the official channels from the government, the information about how the donations were going to be deployed, stopped in October. In the beginning of April the Senate of the Republic exhorted the Secretariats of the Interior and Finance and Public Credit, as well as the governments of Chiapas, Puebla, Morelos, Oaxaca, the State of Mexico and Mexico City, to the allocation of resources to attend to the victims of the earthquakes of September 7 and 19, 2017, earmarking as a priority resources for the comprehensive care of children and adolescents.

An undefined number of people is still living in a tent with support from NGOs like Techo, Cadena, Unicef etc.
