Remembrance

Within a deep gorge located in the Syunik region of southern Armenia lies the ancient cave village of Khndzoresk. Though currently uninhabited, it was one of the most populated villages in the country. Between the years 1950 and 1970 a gradual transfer process took place, forming a new village, risen only a few kilometers from the valley. The population of old Khndzoresk dismantled their cave homes, and with donkeys bearing the stones which would build the foundation of their new lives, they left the caves.

What are the memories of a place with such a unique geography?

The village of caves appears to be a shadow of itself - abandoned, yet still maintaining its natural strength. It bears witness to a collection of almost imperceptible memory. The testimonies of the past mingle with the present, creating a subtle weave joining the memory of yesterday and the reality of today. As if a stream of consciousness, the memory unfolds new paths through what is no longer there and builds a dreamlike narrative which reveals the invisible through the traces in the rocks.
