Project Info

'The ReCyclers of Port-Au-Prince'.

In a 200 acre dump just north of Port-Au-Prince in Haiti, some 2,000 men, women and childen eek out a meagre living scouring through the trash for recycling or sale. Its a foul, putrid and often dangerous to live and work.

Taking photographs there was not easy at all. Many of the inhabitants have run from police in the city and hide in this smokey refuge while working the dump both day and night. It took time and a few key contacts to enter and be allowed to roam the smouldering wasteland with a camera.

The most surprising thing I found was the tenderness of those who I eventually ended up photographimg- they were very sceptical at first- I was threatened more than a few times!- but each day I returned, the more welcome I became.

This project is a global work in process as I have also visited similar sites in Guatemala and The Philippines and planning much more in the years ahead.

All the photographs were taken in January 2015.

My name is Giles Clarke, originally from the UK but now residing in New York City. I am represented by Getty Images Reportage.

Thank you for your consideration.
