Sleeping village (2013)

EN - This project documents my after dark explorations of a few villages in the south-east of Sardinia, small resort towns where, more than in any other place I've been in Italy, I had the perception of a lack of roots. In many Italian towns you can feel centuries of history watching you from the walls; in others there is a strong identity (sometimes negative) given by the urban planning – or lack thereof. Here it seems to me both are missing, but the consequent anonymity makes these places paradoxically fascinating, because it shows, against the vastness of the night and of the surrounding nature, the fragility of the human presence, represented by solitary street lamps, well tended hedges, fences, cars parked in the empty streets.

IT - Le immagini di questo lavoro documentano l'esplorazione notturna di alcuni paesi del sud-est della Sardegna, piccoli centri turistici dove, più che in qualunque altro posto io abbia visitato in Italia, ho avuto la sensazione di una mancanza di radici. In molti nostri borghi si ha un senso preciso della storia, dato da un passato di secoli; in altri c'è un'identità urbanistica (quand'anche negativa) forte. Qui mi sembra manchino l'uno e l'altra; ma l'anonimato rende questi luoghi paradossalmente suggestivi, perché evidenzia, nella vastità della notte e della natura circostante, la fragilità della presenza umana, rappresentata da lampioni solitari, recinzioni, siepi ben curate, automobili parcheggiate nelle strade deserte.
