SUBWAYS

A metropolitan underworld: compulsory, for unwheeled city-users.

The walkable subways, toward trains or crossing roads, have two levels of existence: the upper generally bright and broad, the lower often narrow, maybe precariously enlightened, generally scribbled, sloppy, or ‘lively decorated’.

Even in big, modern cities, these places can be ‘peripheral’ only few meters away or aside from the very centre town, denouncing … from below, that the suburbs are reaching the inner city, sometime improving the glimpse of the place with the help of unknown writers.

Photographically — besides the opportunity of an environmental document just few steps dowstairs — it is remarkable the geometries the subways offer and the challenge to depict or convey in a shoot the incompatible ocular tips of the two worlds: the blinding glare of the ascent and the apprehensive dim sight of the descent. Qualities that must be catched and felt as equally inscrutable. Bringing meaning, consistency and right of presence to these far tonal ends into the frame, is a task to aim for.
