Burmese Chronicle
In turn, a British colony, a military dictatorship, a fractured nation and a land of ethnic conflicts, Burma has experienced a turbulent history between silence, poverty and inward-looking.
Today, the country is modernizing and tentatively opens to political and economic freedom, Aung San Suu Kyi is the leader of the National League for Democracy and officially wons a sit in Parliament, the contemporary technologies are gaining ground and a material well-being seems to impose itself.
However the transition is not without risks. The materialistic excitement collides with traditional values and unveils an ultra-liberal greed. If some areas remain closed to tourists, the population is receptive to the other with imperturbable consistency.
During my three trips in 1999, then in 2012 and finally in December 2013, it is this gradual change made of paradoxes that I have observed.
The series of photos presented here arises from my last trips.
