(STILL) THE BARBARIANS

Barbarian, from the Greek (βάρβαρος, bárbaro),its literal translation is "babbling". The ancient Greeks used the term in a pejorative way to refer to foreigners who did not speak Greek or Latin and whose foreign language sounded to his ears like a incompressible babble(bar-bar-,like blah-blah). In the early modern period and sometimes later, they still used it for the Turks in a clearly pejorativ[e](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pejorative) way. Stereotypes: any member of a nation judged by some to be less civilized or orderly (tribes), a certain "primitive" cultural group (nomads) or social class (bandits). In idiomatic or figurative usage, a "barbarian" may also be an individual reference to a brutal, cruel, warlike, insensitive person. In the Roman Empire, Romans used the word "barbarian" for many people, such as the Germanics, Celts, Iberians, Thracians and Parthian.

Through History ,ethnology and traditional anthropology, with an already outdated terminology and a Eurocentric view of primitive societies, called barbarism to a stage of cultural evolution of human societies, intermediate between wildness and civilization. Paradoxically, they may instead be admired and romanticized as noble savages ("Discours sur l'origine et les fondements de l'inégalité parmi les hommes", Jean Jaques Rosseau, 1755).

Reviewing History I try to understand the present.Consequences continue to be unfair. The aim of this project is to give visibility to the people that I use as "consequences":Top Manta. This are street vendors, mostly sub-Saharan , that sell Chinese copies of expensive brands , placing the product over white sheets (Manta means in Spanish blanket, sheet). They live terrified, always with fear, prepared to run in case the police comes. As Romans felt centuries ago, we have the uncomfortable feeling of the approach of the "barbarians", foreigners who migrate in search of our "paradise". History repeats itself and it seems that we have not been able to learn.
