The Devil is in the Details.
The world is increasingly fighting wildfires. Last Summer a third of the island Evia in Greece was destroyed completely. All was black but within half a year grass pops up from the scorched surface. Capturing this nascent moment. The pictures look idyllic but at second the juxtaposition of new life in bright green with the charred black dead trees becomes discernible. The contrast reminds us that we might destroy our environment, but our precious planet will keep on turning, also without us human beings.
The world is increasingly fighting wildfires. Last Summer a third of the island Evia in Greece was destroyed completely. Wherever you looked, the earth, plants, and sky, all were black. Having lived before in areas prone to wildfires I remember profoundly and with sheer admiration the strength of nature. Within half a year grass pops up from the scorched surface and even a few tender sprouts from the burned trees.
This time, I just had to go back and capture this nascent moment before its green became too big or too dry due to the encroaching summer-heat.
The pictures look idyllic, paradisiacal at first, but at second glance the distinct and disturbing details of destruction become visible. The juxtaposition of new life in bright green with the charred black dead trees becomes discernible.
This force of nature gives hope as well. With destruction surrounding us, we are in need of a sanctuary. Our planet Earth is our ultimate Sanctuary and like all shelters we must not take her for granted. The bright green contrasting the blackened soil and charred trees remind us that we might destroy our environment but our precious planet will keep on turning, also without us human beings.
