A Journey of a Thousand Miles

"A Journey of a Thousand Miles" project spans 4 countries and 2 continents. It all started when I witnessed the lockdown of 11 million people in Wuhan, which is believed to be without precedent in public health history. After evacuation from China and compulsory hospital quarantine in Poland, I arrived in Milan to continue my photographic work during the Italian outbreak.

The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic is believed to have started in November 2019 in Wuhan. I arrived there in December 2019 and started lecturing Visual Communication at a local university. Then, to everyone's surprise, on January 23, Wuhan was shut off from the rest of the world and put under lockdown. Chaos engulfed the whole province.

On February 1, I signed up for evacuation from China to Europe. The evacuation lasted roughly 40 hours and turned out to be a complex and successful endeavor. Different European nationals flew to different European countries. All evacuees started undergoing quarantine. Mine was in the military hospital in Poland.

On February 25, after learning that Italy became the European epicenter of coronavirus - against the odds - I arrived in Milan to continue my photographic work during the Italian outbreak. On March 3 - a few days before announcing national lockdown in Italy - I returned to my hometown in Poland.
