España Profunda

"España Profunda" is a project about human identity as it exists within contemporary rural Spain. It is about the feelings of loneliness, loss, and isolation that everyone -not only elderly and foreigners- can experience, both in their homeland and abroad. It is about the sense of being exiled even from ourselves.

I took these pictures on the autonomous communities of Castilla y León and the Principado de Asturias, in the summer of 2017. The protagonists of the project are friends that I met on that trip, as well as people I approached on the way.

The dominat feature in these images is played by the absence of a recognition between the protagonists of the story and the camera, which looks into the natural relationship between people and the landscape.

These photographs are not a strict document of the experience and the place; rather, they represent a commonplace defined by explicit socioeconomic and cultural characteristics, although it remains conceptually unlimited. Even if many Spanish communities seem forgotten and uninhabited, to be in them is to feel completely alive, or at least to be reviving.
