Little Belize

„ Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.“ (Psalm 34,11)
Those are the first lines of the manual of the Mennonite catechism.
No radio, no music, no telephone; Little Belize is a Mennonite village in one of the smallest countries of Central America, which is called by the same name. It counts 2500 citizens, divided into 36 settlements with a school and a church each.
Up to this day, the shy farmers communicate in ‚Low German’, a language that stems from their Prussian origin.
‚Work for six days and on the seventh thou shall rest’ it says written in the bible – which is strictly obeyed by the community.
Their daily life includes no electricity, hardly any toys and their mode of transportation is horse and carriage. Most families count more than 15 children, which are exposed to the Caribbean sun for long working hours on the field from an early age on.
Life is as it was in the last century and fried lard considered a delicacy for breakfast.
